THID joins Billard Leece Partnership

7 Feb 2017

THID is teaming up with Billard Leece Partnership Pty Ltd (BLP), expanding their service offer by diversification into Interior Design.

Tonya and the team will join BLP alongside newly appointed Vicki Murphie, a leading workplace designer. Both Tonya and Vicki will oversee a team of eight interior designers working across BLP’s studios.

THID has an established 20 year relationship with BLP with the first collaboration between the parties taking place in 1997. Two decades later, the strength of this partnership has resulted in numerous collaborations including the internationally acclaimed Royal Children’s Hospital and more recently The University of Melbourne Werribee Redevelopment, BlueCross Springfield Redevelopment, Albury Wodonga Cancer Centre and Hong Kong Children’s Hospital.

We are thrilled to be joining the BLP family. Our expertise and project portfolio is a great fit with what BLP already offers and we are looking forward to working together to expand the business across Australia and internationally. We will be able to provide an expansive, comprehensive service to all of our clients, given the quality, experience and resources of the combined team.

Check out the finished photos of a little extension to Re-Gen, Mother and Baby Withdrawal Centre at Ivanhoe.

We were inspired by this  ‘addiction’ animation in the design stage and hopefully we’ve created a happier, social place to reduce addiction.

holiday snaps

17 Sep 2015

just back from her modernism pilgrimage in California – Tonya found The Eames’ house in LA was a highlight.  http://www.eamesfoundation.org/eames-house-history/

Built in 1947 – and surrounded by gum trees – this house stands so simply and elegantly in the landscape, but it’s a house for living in and enjoying – not just for show.   Great to see the Australian eucalyptus – ‘tallow wood’ cladding standing the test of time.

THID has a warehouse residence renovation under construction in Fitzroy – a true gem of an interior hidden behind an old laneway wall.

Just installed – new steel framed windows designed by THID and manufactured by Skyrange and Armac Glass in Melbourne.

The paint finish is Murobond ‘bridge paint’, a micaceous iron oxide paint that protects steel for 25 years… and adds a touch of sparkle.

Thanks again to Urban Sparrow for taking such care when photographing one of our littler jobs – A new bench seat in the waiting area of a medical consultation suite.

Welcome 2015

7 Feb 2015

It’s time to say hello again… hello 2015.

And we begin the year by smashing up a fantastic interior in Fitzroy.  This warehouse residence was last renovated in 1986 and it has a bit of “wake me up before you go-go” to it.   We have drawn a beautiful scheme for this home.  But at Demolition is our last chance to decide what can stay and what really has to go-go.

photo night BBQ in Richmond

4 Dec 2014

Just finished ready in time for Summer, a beautifully opened up cottage in Richmond.   Great to collaborate with my green-thumbed mate, Patrick from Inner City Nature – on the bbq deck, pond and backyard.  A beautiful balmy night for a shoot with The Urban Sparrow  – helped along by Bernard’s bbq salmon and a well stocked beer fridge.

Now sorry Santa, if we could just move this big Christmas tree out – just a smidgen – for the shoot… that would be great thanks!

cool exhibition

3 Oct 2014

Last night went to Modern Times to see an exhibition of photographs by Tom Blachford.   Highly recommended – for any modernist architecture lovers.  Hauntingly beautiful photographs of classic Palm Springs  mid century houses – all captured under moonlight.   So get to Modern Times in Smith Street, Fitzroy before it closes on Sunday 19th October.    We just had to have this one…

Chipping back the plaster, a wonderfully rustic brick fireplace was revealed as the starting point….

add a stainless steel bench, some big black stained plywood cupboards, a mobile marble topped bench and some big green industrial pendant lights – oh and don’t forget my favourite white painted lining board ceiling -and presto we have the classic Fitzroy chef’s home kitchen.

Love the feel of the black leather handles from Made Measure.

mobile children’s gallery launch

25 Feb 2014

A good friend of mine, Kathy Holowko, has been assisting the Education Centre at Royal Childrens Hospital with an art project.

Today she launched the “mobile children’s gallery” … a crafted mobile timber “book box” which opens up to display patients’ artworks / writings / films.

The mobile gallery is based around the design of an overbed table… and can be wheeled around for individual bedside viewings or contributions.

A picture from the launch today…  Love it, Kath.

Inspired by the tree forms of the Albert Park site, the gallery features an extraordinary canopy ceiling made from panels of recycled Kauri Pine.

A beautifully detailed interior and exterior – designed by Sydney firm Francis-Jones Morehen Thorpwith Auckland firm Archimedia .

Great new pics of the interior just received.

Architecture: Billard Leece Partnership.

Paola worked closely  with the BLP team on the finishes, furnishings and joinery.

Fantastic communal spaces which we are really proud of and overall a really fine quality building for the Bendigo campus.   It feels  so good to see something finished so well.

Welcome 2013 and a cute kitchen in Kensington.

4 Feb 2013

After a lovely summer break we are BACK!

Over the holidays, I had time to share with my good friends Lynn and Guy at their newly renovated home in Kensington.  We designed their kitchen to be the best hangout space ever.  Inspired by drinking Campari at sunset, the kitchen is a bit like a bar and it has a fantastic window seat dining area which looks out to the industrial / residential surrounds of Kensington.

My favourite thing is the record player – which was situated (with a stack of records) conveniently  in the centre of it all.

Professional photos are coming…. but in the meantime –  some iphone panorama shots by Guy.  Thanks Guy!

Best wishes for Christmas and see you in 2013

Strike a pose!

1 Nov 2012

Just before the RMH Allied Health architectural photo shoot, our photographer, Dianna Snape, came across these bright red props and thought it’d make a great photo so she told us to strike a pose…and this is what we came up with…we look like the wiggles gone wrong! Can’t wait to see the interior shots. We’ll post them up as soon as we get them. Keep checking the website for updates.

RCH wins the World Architecture Festival 2012 ‘health’ award

8 Oct 2012

Well that’s pretty big news.  The Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne – A fantastic building in Melbourne, for fantastic families in Melbourne designed by loads of fantastic people in Melbourne…. and now recognized by The World.  (well.. the world of architecture…)

Paola and Tonya worked as part of the big joint venture team (Billard Leece Partnership and Bates Smart) on the clinical interiors for this new building from first concept to winning the bid and for 3 years following.  It’s pretty nice to see something that started as an idea come to completion and be so loved.  Congratulations to everyone who worked on this project and stuck it through. (and the meerkats actually happened!)

For the record, the design for the Royal Childrens Hospital has been flat out winning awards this year.  And not all of them in the ‘health’ category … which is very exciting.  Once upon a time, hospitals were considered the daggy “undesigned” buildings – they never got a mention at awards ceremonies which were typically won by galleries, concert halls and other “fancy-pants” buildings.  But it does seem that a cultural shift is happening… Not only are governments realising that healthy uplifting spaces can actually make people feel better quicker (costing them less $) but great architects and designers are also embracing the challenge of designing “healthy” health buildings too.

The Royal Childrens Hospital was awarded the Victorian medal in the Victoria Architecture Award 2012.  See the photo below of just a few of our team members there to accept the award on the night.

Spot Paola Echeverry and Tonya Hinde (hint: the hand...)

This makes me feel really good.  It’s all very well to win awards amongst other health buildings, but for a hospital to win an overall architecture medal? .. well that’s life changing.   And it makes me think that hospital architecture just might be getting better…  nice thought huh?
